Done Clapping Pushups (17/366)

"Stick to the basics and when you feel you've mastered them, it's time to start all over again. Begin anew - again with the basics - this time paying closer attention."
~ Coach Greg Glassman, CrossFit founder

Shortly after we got married, Nick found CrossFit (if you know him or his blog, you know how devoted he is to it - it helped him lose 30 pounds, after all). I had been into fitness for a while before that, but nothing has helped me feel stronger and more prepared for life's varied physical challenges than CrossFit. Nick and I are even certified trainers.

Today while doing some push ups, I thought I'd try something I'd never tried before, but always thought was cool. Clapping push ups.

I always used to think clapping push ups were scary - what if you miss the clap and fall on your face? But ever since we started doing CrossFit, we've honed our agility, coordination, and accuracy - not to mention power, speed, and strength. All fundamentals of CrossFit, and all necessary skills for doing something like a clapping push up. Today, I was not afraid to attempt this.

To perform a clapping push up, you of course start with a push up. You begin in the plank position with your hands about shoulder-width apart. Lower yourself down while keeping your body in a plank, until your chest touches the ground. Then, with an explosive movement, push yourself up, and when your upper body is in the air, clap - then dampen your landing by bending your elbows as you catch yourself into your next downward position. Repeat!
